Voei longe, ao refúgio mais longínquo

Onde me posso encontrar.

Onde espero de mim uma alvorada.

Na escuridão rasgada do dia,

Em que o sol descansa para a madrugada,

Fiz para ti o que sabia.

Florbela Espanca has taught me to long for dawns and to overcome the sadness of the apparent loneliness of youth. It was in this poem that I found myself endowed with the awareness to feel that I am whole when I’m writing. And it was with these words that I chose to premeditate the path I want for myself. I will always let my voice sound at peace. Thank you, Flor d’Alma da Conceição, for so much that you have left me/us.

A Florbela Espanca ensinou-me a desejar alvoradas e a superar a tristeza da aparente solidão da juventude. Foi neste meu primeiro poema que encontrei a consciência para sentir que a escrever estou inteira. E foi com estas palavras que escolhi, há exatamente quatro anos, premeditar o caminho que quero para mim. Deixarei sempre que a minha voz soe em paz. I have been surrounded by books for almost 30 years. I’ve published one and soon will be publishing another. I write everyday and I have a sacred relationship with words. And this book is about relationship, not religion. Relationship with others, with me and with it’s main caracter: Jesus Christ.

I’m in love with the Bible which, in fact, it’s not just a book, it’s The Book. Or, if we want to go to the rooth of the word, that comes from the greek “biblion” which means “ensemble of books”, The Bible is an entire library inside a hardcover. 

For the last 50 years, The Bible has been the most sold book in the world. It was the first printed book in the West. It’s the most distributed book in the history of mankind, maybe because it tells the story of mankind. It was a book written to be read by everyone, in every era. Through The Bible I can better understand my on story. It’s like a compass that guides me and it’s definetly the most up-to-date book on my shelves.

I chose the brazilian portuguese translation of The Message, by Eugene Peterson, because it’s a contemporary translation of The Bible based on the original languages it has been written. It makes for an easy reading and understanding and tries to preserve, in a modern language, the thoughts and events that are narrated in the original book. The Bible includes law books, historic books, poetry books, profecy books, biographies and epistles (formal letters). About 40 different people wrote The Bible throughout a period of 1500 years. It’s authors have been kings, fishermen, priests, government officials, farmers, shepherds and doctors. In the mists of this diversity, there is an incredible unity, with common themes throughout the book. The Bible is, in my opinion, the most complete book one can have.

For some it may be just an object for decoration purposes, while others consider it as general knowledge. Some think of it has a book to be keep closed on the nightstand. like some kind of lucky charm; and others consider it a tabu book. But for me it’s a book that is always opened, that was read and reread, studied and should not be taken to the letter. It keeps me company daily e still surprises and makes me love it. 

The Message is my Bible of choice. It’s the book that sustains and inspires me to write, to live and to pass along that which I truly believe is the best message in the world: supreme and unconditional Love.
